Playa del Carmen is a very beatiful place by day but also by night, a great place to visit in Mexico´s Riviera Maya.
By day you will be overwhelmed by the turquoise color palette of the sea, the white and baby-powder like sand, signature architecture of beach hotels and mexican classic food like guacamole.
But as the night falls and the day gets darker (at 5:30 p.m during the winter season!) the beauty of Mexico´s colofulness emerges, neon lights, characteristic mexican handcrafts like boots or sombreros, marimba players, lamps and of course food… …always the food!
I must admit I was amazed of all the different food joints with a very wide range of cuisines. From cold coconuts sold in the street, french boulangerie, italian gelatos, tacos, cochinita pibil street vendors to a very specialised mayan cuisine restaurant.
Among the best things I ate were the chocolate smoothie in “Ah Cacao”, a great croissant au beurre filled with smoked ham and cheese in “Chez Céline”, mexican nachos with beans and arrachera beef with a mojito at “Lido, beach club”, mexican version of lasagna with blue tortilla instead of pasta at “Aldea” and a fresh lemon ice pop in a traditional mexican ice-cream chain called “La Michoacana”.
In order to get a taste of all the different places you will need a couple of days and a lot of stomach but Playa del Carmen is a great spot to enjoy the very best of Mexico´s Riviera Maya: the best beaches, a lot of shopping spots, beautiful people and food… great food!
